Perrysburg mayor supports annexation of sometimes troubled neighborhood | News
PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) - Perrysburg Mayor Nelson Evans is pushing for Perrysburg Township’s Heights Neighborhood to be annexed by the city.
The Heights are located at the intersection of Route 25 and Roachton Road, near Levis Commons. The neighborhood has a bad reputation with many in town, often making headlines for all the wrong reasons. One such instance was the murder of 21-year-old Leandra Frankum in July of 2012.
Evans says the neighborhood is an island, surrounded by the city.
“A lot of times people will move into the area and they'll say 'Perrysburg' and they'll call the city officers, say 'I've got a problem.' And we always have to refer them to the township,” said Evans. “They've made a lot of steps forward out there with the crime issue. They've got a good group of people out there working that really care about their community.”
One of those people is Stephanie Schrda, Executive Director of the Perrysburg Heights Community Center.
“[We’re working] to improve the lives of all residents here through education, social projects that we've provided here for twenty-some years,” said Schrda. “The annexation would actually be a positive for the neighborhood. Lowering some of the taxes, some of the services included, garbage, snow plowing, that type of thing.”
Evans says the process of annexing the Heights will take between 6 and 9 months.
