Demand high for community garden space | Environment
PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) – There is a long waiting list for community garden plots at the 577 Foundation in Perrysburg.
The foundation provides plots and gardening tools free of charge to community members, in exchange for a promise to donate a portion of the food grown there to local food banks.
Leaders at the foundation say the waiting list for plots is extremely long; some have waited as long as 4 years to claim a space.
“There is a lot of interest in that, especially today, not only because of what’s going on with our food supply but the economy is still bad and people are becoming more and more interested in growing their own food [and] knowing where it's coming from,” said 577 Foundation Horticulturist Vicki Gallagher.
